It’s the ultimate Scottish fashion association, but in the upcoming season you better get ready for a Tartan Takeover! Adore or abhor it, tartan is starting to make a huge comeback, even sneaking onto the catwalks during Paris Fashion Week! Miss Vivienne Westwood has shown she is quite the fan, choosing to let the gumption of tartan speak for her style.

She was the first of many designers to indulge in the passionate love affair with tartan. Although, it would seem that tartan isn’t just being restricted to the traditional red. Oh no, designers are really splashing into the colour palette, applying Blues, Greens and Yellows to their creations.
Alexander McQueen in particular is using heatherish tones, adopting and applying the Scotland tradition. Retailers are always quick to copy, with the likes of Accessorize and New Look getting the tartan out, blazoning it across any accessory and garment they can find.
River Island in particular has really taken tartan to heart, fabricating everything from shorts to blazers to slippers with the Scottish custom. Tartan is the next transformative step in the revolution of Punk fashion.
Of course there is always the question: what exactly do I where with tartan? Indeed, it is quite a difficult pattern to work with, and there are often a few fashion faux pas when it comes to matching the jeans to the jersey. However, there are some obvious solutions, and in this case, just having plain colours is usually a success.

Take black, for example. It’s a real killer, because it doesn’t make you look over dressed, nor does it make you look too dismal. It’s just the right balance of colour and composition. A black V-neck jumper and a little tartan skirt will be a real original mode this Autumn. Leather is a fabulous match, creating a real statement look, a la Dolce and Gobbana in 2008. The look itself can depend on the colour. Take purple. Mixing it with black might make it like an ebony explosion, so white is usually a good match, as it provides that smooth/uplifting combo that is a must have for this season.
