The Saturdays, Kate Moss, and not to mention our favourite of them all Kate Middleton, are doing the high street fashion world wonders with recent snaps of them rocking the latest high street bargains. With shops such as Topshop, River Island and Miss Selfridge selling a high range of day to night outfits, not to mention vibrant, snazzy and many patterned items for sale, no wonder they are grabbing their hands on a cheeky bargain or two.
But surely celebrities, only wear expensive designer brands and sky high Christian Louboutins? Not to mention royalty? Anyone would think Kate has her clothes personally made for her? Nope, apparently they are all as normal as the rest of us and shop at Topshop too! Although they get the cheeky advantage of wearing some ridiculously priced clothes, they get to wear the high street ones (like all of us normal unfamous people) and lets be honest, you can hardly tell the difference between designer and high street these days anyway!
These high street brands must be chuffed with sales lately, at this rate, if Celebrities keep wearing high street brands, they’ll be running out of stock due to mad fans buying the same thing surely? Correct, crazy fans will go to any length to own a ‘little piece’ of their favourite star, and if that means spending £40 on a dress from Topshop, so be it!
Claire Hayes, sales assistant at Topshop Cambridge agrees 100% with this saying “Working in Topshop has some great advantages, not only the discount, but I’m obsessed with magazines, let alone celebs, so if I see a celeb wearing a Topshop item, I’m the first one to run, grab it, and hide it behind the till for later so I can purchase it. A little cheeky I know, but we can’t complain when it’s at a reasonable price. If I saw Jessie J wearing a Mulberry Jacket, I definitely wouldn’t be hopping on a train to London to go and buy one before they all ran out, there’s a bit of a realistic difference.”
So, how much of an impact are these high street loving celebs having on stores? Luckily, Topshop, River Island and Miss Selfridge all do well on sales, yet occasionally, they will run out of stock on a certain item if it has been previewed or reviewed by a celebrity in one of the Magazines.
Fashion Student Emily Short from Cambridge is your typical celebrity obsessed girl. With an unhealthy obsession with the likes of Jessie J and The Saturdays, she’s always on the lookout for what they are wearing. “I’m constantly checking out magazines to see if they have been snapped wearing something I can afford myself. My friends say that I shouldn’t copy a celeb and should work with my own individual style, but what I’m doing is perfectly ok. No one tells off a 13 year old for having pictures of Justin Bieber all over their room do they?”
There seems to have been a positive reaction from fans seeing Celebs wearing high street brands. The media world has a tendency to glamorize things, sometimes showing them in an unrealistic light to everyone, which is why seeing celebs in high street brands, shows teenagers and young adults that you can dress like an ‘A-Lister’ at an affordable price.
Casey Harrison, fan of Jessie J, Rihanna and Little Mix said “When I see a celebrity wearing a high street brand, it reminds me that they are normal people just with an amazing career. Often seeing celebrities at red carpets in incredible gowns makes you feel on a completely different planet to them. I feel its important for singers, celebrities and fashion icons to all mix up their style and wear more affordable clothing as it reaches their audience, showing them that just because they are celebs, they don’t have to splurge £100’s on designer clothes to look good”.
Lets hope that the high street continue to stock up on fab items for the celebs to keep rocking on the catwalk then!
