Hey Yo, It’s Row Bow!

It’s that is the time of year where most of us will move away from our toasty family homes and back to our cold student digs. For some it may be your first time, others will already know the chilly perils of student living. As a student the quickest way to bond with your new housemates is to use each other’s body heat to keep warm. Returning students may have been wise and stored food in their cheeks for the arctic winter months ahead.

But for you newbies, and the fashionable returnees, I’m here to give you a simple solution to the dreaded alternative of, turning on the heating. God Forbid!

Blazer? Blaze-Bore! Parker? Nuh-er! Duffle coats? Don’t even think about it! The only way to banish the icy breeze this season is a big folk coat. The Autumn/Winter 2014/15 catwalks were covered with them back in February and now it’s time to invest in your own. Of course being students we probably won’t be able to get our thrifty fingers on the pretty poncho Cara D was sporting in the Burberry Prorsum Fall 2014 show. But what we can do, as well as drooling over them, is look to the catwalks for inspiration for our winter wardrobes.

Burberry Prorsum Vs New Look

If you are totally taken by the warm tones of Burberry Prorsum’s blanket ponchos, check out this New Look offering instead. Far more suited to a student-sized purse, the blanket wrap style makes it easy to adapt for different looks. Wear it loose over a pair of dark skinny jeans or wrap a tan belt around and show it off as a coat-dress.

Chanel vs Primark

Chanel’s seasonal fashion show took place in an exquisitely fabulous supermarket. Not sure the Chanel shops would quite cut the price-match deal at your local? Perhaps this purple Primark number is more your thing. The large plaid print looks great on the oversized, loose fitting coat and is sure to warm your cockles during late night lectures. Add a iridescent, metallic bag to compliment the lilac hues.

ETRO vs New Look

ETRO’s Autumn/Winter range includes a brilliant selection of sophisticated prints. This pretty little number will set you back a whopping £1505! That’s a good few months rent, so maybe try out another New Look version. At £24.99 it’s definitely student friendly. The warm tones & autumnal pallet create a richer appearance leading no one to suspect you’re doing winter chic, super cheap!

ISSA vs Matalan and Forever 21

What’s black, white and red all over? ISSA’s version of the folk coat of course! The almost floor-length wrap makes a big statement and if you want to try the look, go to Matalan or Forever21. Matalan imitates the geometric prints, although not as graphic, it sticks to the grey scale pallet too. Whilst Forever21 reproduces the dramatic length of ISSA’s wrap, but injects bold colours to the ends with added fringing. Team with big, chunky boots for the most comfortable look ever.

Key features to look out for in a big ol’ folk coats

– Definitely an all-encompassing print. Be it big and graphic or small and intricate, it needs a pattern that reminds us of the countryside, farmers or even tribal markings.
– A warm, autumnal colour palette. We’re talking deep reds, burnt oranges and a dash of some neutral browns.
– Non-defined sleeves. The folk coat is a free-spirit affair, keep it big and baggy.
– Most importantly it should be nice & thick to make for the perfect blanket to snuggle up in in front of a DVD in your room.
