As much as we’re told fashion should be about freedom of expression and doing whatever you want, we all know there are rules. Rules are there to protect us from looking like idiots. Y’know, don’t wear tights with peep toe shoes, don’t wear double denim, never mix navy and black…hang on a minute…
It seems that S/S10 is all about breaking the rules. In these next few articles I’m going to be discussing the fashion rules which are made to be broken, and how to break them. First, double denim…
Gone are the days when double denim just conjured up images of Britney and Justin; it is now seen strutting down the catwalk. With everyone from Twenty 8 Twelve (and if it’s god enough for Sienna, it’s good enough for us.) to D&G showing it, it seems liken this throwback from the 90s is here is stay. But even when you break the rules, there are still some guidelines.
1. Keep It Casual
Like wearing jeans to a ball, wearing double denim to anything formal is social, and fashion suicide. Rock this look in the day, but save it in the evening.
2. Don’t wear the same shade top to toe
This works best with a contrast. Dark jeans and a stonewash denim jacket or shirt will look fab. Or keep the jacket or shirt unbuttoned for a colour contrast in your top half.
3. Guys can wear it too!!
Guys can definitely pull off this trend. Look for a denim jacket or shirt to wear with your jeans. Take inspiration from Zac Efron who did a fantastic job of double denim.
4. Beg, Borrow or Steal
We all remember denim in the 90s, which means someone you know probably has an old shirt or jacket hanging round in the back of their wardrobe or in their loft. Ask your mum, auntie, or even your dad. No luck? Try charity and vintage shops for a cheap bargain.
5. Don’t go too far
Denim bandanas really should stay in the 90s.
