He can use any object as a typology. He then inserts it into a system that portrays the life cycle of that object. He has used the typology of a trouser for example which transforms into a calf’s leg!

Essentially, this is a method of mass communication of everyday objects.

Here I started asking Chhabra a few questions…

When it comes to the design process, who is the most responsible? The designer or the consumer?

The Designer is responsible. We designers are responsible for the beginning of the product because we choose what materials and processes will go into the making of the product. Mass production is not bad but it hasn’t been socially responsible.

If you could do a lecture at uni what would it be?

Design with a purpose. And do your research!

Influences?

Aitor Throup is a big influence and Anthony Dunne & Fiona Raby, who wrote the book ‘Critical Design thinkers’

What do your parents do?

Father worked in the army along with my brother. So I get the ‘non-decoration’ and ‘everything having a purpose’ view on life from them.

Dreams or goals for the future?

To have my own studio up and running. Also, I want to do more collaborations and to do more art installations. I don’t want to get into the cycle of designing for seasons or be on a runway, it’s just not my thing.

I assume you notice how women dress. Do you have any preferences?

Women look good when they’re happy and when they look comfortable and confident in what they wear. I’m not into the trend of spending excessive amounts of money on the latest bag for it to be out of date in a few months and then buy another expensive bag to replace it. It creates a lot of waste and ethical immorality.

What do you avoid wearing?

I do like leather shoes but I make sure I wear the hell out of them first. I try to stay away from unethical clothing, and stuff that I don’t need. I don’t have an iphone. I don’t need one. What am I gonna use the apps for?

This is the kind of article I really wish I saw more of in fashion magazines! “Embodying Ethics” is such a helpful way of thinking about our social and ethical responsibility in all areas of life, but it’s especially relevant in the fashion industry.

    Such a great interview!
