In 2010 Lana was an undiscovered talent with a future ahead that no-one could envisage. Two years on, she has taken the UK by storm with her beauty and magical music aptitude and has become a style and music icon.
Lana, formally known as Elizabeth Grant and born in New York, could barely play the guitar until she was 18 when her uncle taught her the six chords that inspired her to write the enchanting songs that have won the hearts of many across the globe.
She began her career playing in the underground clubs in Brooklyn where she gained a devoted fan base. Lana was inspired by her desire ‘to be part of a high-class scene of musicians’ in the hope that she would ‘meet people and fall in love…the way they used to in the 60s’.
The Del Rey style gives an unmistakeable nod to 60s fashion as she sports the signature ‘Twiggy’ eyeliner with long eyelashes and barely there foundation. Her beehive hair teamed with ribbons and sometimes diamante headbands (known for taking 7 hours to create!) is also reflective of by gone eras with a modern twist.
Her clothes are cutesy and coy with an undertone of sexy-chic working excellently with her modern vintage appeal. This self-styled oxymoronic image is what makes Lana new and exciting and the music industry has been crying out for stand out talent like this for some time.
Now onto the music, which is the most important, right? Her very emotive vocals along with the interesting cinematic sounds to her songs are what set Lana apart from the rest. The combination of different instruments and sound layers create enchanting and magic music that captivates the listener, allowing their mind to wonder in the glorious world of love and heartache that Lana refers to.
Considering the complicated technicalities of her music, you would think she would have difficulty performing live. But this is not the case for Miss Del Rey who continues to wow with every live performance she embarks upon.
And if her successful singing career was not enough, Lana has now become a very successful model and is set to head the H&M Autumn/Winter campaign for 2012. She has been signed by the agency NEXT Model Management and so we are likely to see many more fashion campaigns featuring Miss Del Rey, so watch this space…
