Collars have been a major fashion trend over the last few seasons and as shown by the spring/summer 2012 catwalk, they will be a must have accessory for the foreseeable future.

Celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Alexa Chung, Fearne Cotton and Emma Watson have embraced the 60s Peter Pan collar with conviction turning the buttoned up, preppy look into the new sexy.

The good thing about the collar is that it suits nearly every figure and can be worn in many different ways. If we take the above celebrities, for example, they all have very different styles, but manage to incorporate the same trend into their wardrobes.

Collars tend to be associated with the corporate, suited look but the current wave of buttoned-up shirts are more casual than ever.

My favourite spring ensemble has to be the pastel knitted jumper worn over a cream shirt or with a pearly necklace collar to achieve that cutesy, girly style. I also find shift or skater dresses with a Peter Pan collar equally adorable, especially when worn with a knitted cardigan exuding 50s diner chic.

If you have a short pixie cropped hair style, then you MUST invest in a collar because the short hair teamed with an effortlessly girly accessory, does wonders for your neckline.

You know when a trend has taken off when brands begin to specialise in the production of the item in question. Nauticoco has done just that by creating beautiful silk collars, made to order and in many different shades and designs.

The collars can be easily added to any outfit, giving a little magic touch to your spring wardrobe. The collars can be personalised to reflect your own individual style. Therefore you can design the collar that will work the hardest in creating the new spring you.

Recently, Nauticoco has created detachable peplums allowing any dress, top or skirt to be transformed into a gorgeous figure enhancing specimen. But as these items are coming in at a rather pricey £59.00 it is vital that we do a quick bit of planning to ensure that the right colour and style are selected to maximise usage, and value for money.

If this is still on the steep side of the price range then collars and peplums are very easy to make at home or can be taken from old shirts and tops. The use of contrasting lace and pearly decorations accurately reflect the current wave of catwalk collars along with delicate crocheting and broderie anglaise, as shown by brands such as Louis Vuitton.
