It’s that time of year again when resolutions are made to get fit and lose Christmas season pounds.  I’m guessing quite a few of you have joined the gym already and are now rooting through the wardrobe looking for some passable sports gear. Well – in the spirit of out with the old, in with the new, how about adding something fresh to your workout wardrobe like:

1. A slogan tee

Witty without even opening your mouth.

Stockists: Spock is my homeboy’ tshirt at www.stylinonline.com; ‘I survived swineflu 2009’ tshirt, ‘I Slept with Tiger’ tshirt (£23.30), Vintage Dodgeball Champion Ringer t-shirt (£23) all available at www.zazzle.com; P Diddy, Puppa Daddy puff (whatever he calls himself these days) wears ‘Vote or Die’ tshirt (no longer available); Napoleon Dynamite wears ‘Vote for Pedro’ t-shirt at www.play.com; Stomach Anatomical tshirt (£9) at www.skeletees.com;  ‘Frankie Says Relax’ t-shirt available in Afflecks Palace, ground floor; Katy Perry wears ‘Be  Afraid’ t-shirt unknown, leggings at www.ph8stores.com.

2. Some decent trainers

Asics, Mizuno, Brooks and Saucony are highly recommended for running and working out.

Stockists:  Blue Mizuno at www.mizuno.eu/store-locator.aspx; Red Asics at www.asics.co.uk/store_locator; Yellow brooks at www.brooksrunning.co.uk; Saucony trainers can be found at http://www.saucony.co.uk/dealers.php

3. The right bottoms: apparently harem pants are a great choice of bottoms for men/women to wear in the gym but you may not fancy the ‘did you just do a doo doo in your pants’ look,  so I’ve added a few other suggestions.

Stockists: (from left to right, top row) Nathan Smith grey unisex harem pant (£70) at www.mycatwalk.com;  Nike Just Do It Long Pant (£32) at www.asos.com; Black Klein Mesh shorts (£17) at www.kleinconnection.com; (bottom row) ASOS Eyelet Stirrup Jogging Lounge Bottoms (£18) at www.asos.com; Red gym shorts at Goldrush; Mens Relaxed Pant at Zara stores.

4. A Lightweight Jacket: Students walk, run, cycle – we get hot, we have a heavy jacket on, it doesn’t help…so instead I recommend a lightweight jacket.  Easy on, easy off. You can buy them in Primark, Topshop etc, the usual suspects, but I saw these two and thought they were worth a showcase:

Stockists: (Women’s) Sweaty Betty Exhiliration jacket at www.sweatybetty.com; (Men’s) Lyle & Scott lightweight hooded jacket (£37.50) at www.lyleandscott.com.  Lyle & Scott have a really good sale on at the moment and some pretty amazing jackets to choose from.

5. Sweatbands: You’re either one of those people like Jaime Murray who sweat a lot and have large amounts of hair so actually need to use a headband or you’re like Luke Wilson in the Royal Tenenbaums who just wears one because it makes him look f***ing cool….simple as.

Stockists: Jaime Murray wears Adidas Headband; Luke Wilson wears Fila Bjorn Borg headband, and Fila sweatbands

6. With it Gym Bag: With all the new gym gear you’re going to need a bag that represents just as well…Lucky I found a couple good ones.

Stockists: (Top – women’s gymbags) Black & White Stripe Denim dufflebag and purple nylon gym bag at American Apparel, Polka Dots Roxy Overnight Gym Bag (£29.99) at Roxy stockists.

(Bottom – men’s gym bags) Black Carhartt drifter duffel bag at Carhartt stockists; Adidas gym bag at adidas stockists; Brown nylon gym bag at American Apparel.

I think that covers everything apart from the music.  Leave me some comments – let me know if you would actually wear any of these looks to the gym…
