As a wannabe fashion journalist, styling has always interested me. I have read some books on styling with little or no success or inspiration, and then I read this book.
The best thing about this book is its mix of visual examples and interesting, easy-to-follow text. It also includes different aspects of styling you can do, and the different ways of getting in to styling, whereas other books on the same subject just concentrate on one or two ways. And, as mentioned before, the visuals create a great impact, as good styling should.
Other added features of the book include interviews with not only designers and stylists, but up and coming stars in the fashion world too (this includes prominent bloggers). There are also “day in the life” segments, where the reader gets a true feel for what it would be like to be a stylist.
For me, the best things about this book are the chapters on inspiration and research, the pages on mood boards, and the use of more independent magazine shoots, such as i-D. This is a great book not just for those who want to be stylists, but for those interested in fashion in general, as it covers a lot of areas. It also keeps to the Basics title, but not in a patronising way. All in all, a fantastic book!
