I recently unearthed my inner geek to model and review two cool t-shirts by American clothing brand, J!NX (we also reviewed another tee a few months back here).
J!NX say they are “heavily influenced by gaming and geeky interests”, and though I wouldn’t put myself into this bracket (I don’t know World of Warcraft from Dungeons and Dragons), they produce a broad range of tees to suit all tastes and interests.
For a suitably geeky location we hit the University of Birmingham’s Main Library, where the photographs by Emmanuel (see idrawwithlight) came out beautifully.
Tee No.1 under review is the ‘I Love My Geek’ womens slogan tee. Baby blue in colour and sickly sweet in message, this tee is as cute as mini pig (google it- they are INSANE).
The fit was snug and well-suited for a woman’s lady lumps, but I found it a little short in the body for my 5’7″ frame. Though I love the curly girly font of the adorable slogan, I wasn’t a huge fan of the thick slightly ribbed cotton the tee was made out of.
For the shoot, I tucked it into some high-waisted denim shorts to cover the slightly-too-short length, which cutesied it up and added a bit of an edge, especially when teamed with some geek-chic faux glasses.
Tee No.2 is the Side Show Womens Tee in Bright Red. This was my favourite out of the two as the material was thinner and more comfortable, and the fit was looser but still flattering. I love the image on the front of the tee; the ghoulishly geeky fork-tongued skull and the freaky symbol-wielding monkey make it weird with equal measures of wonderful.
For the shoot I teamed it with black skinnies, a studded belt and very battered converse, plus a quirky wicker trilby. If that isn’t a quick and easy lecture look with a twist I don’t know what is.
Students are often stereotyped into being lager-loving pub-crawling nocturnal bums who are at University “for the experience”, rather than (as our parents would prefer) eager beavers who love to study and would rather pursue an education than start earning money.
However, where these two strands overlap is in the geek chic trend loved by fashion-savvy students, who take elements of the traditional geek and turn it on its head to make it uber-cool.
Jinx tees do just that. They inject a little bit of dweeb into the look while retaining a cool edge, and are so easy to wear even budding fashionistas just wanting a cute tee about pacman can’t fail.
Or, if your really are a genuine geek you could wear these tees as your daily uniform and everyone else will assume you’re being ironic. Either way, J!NX tees would make a dorkalicious addition to any wardrobe, so what are you waiting for? Get your geek on!
