Hello ladies! I am here to help you sport the new spring trends without encouraging you to increase the end of term overdrawn bank balance. I am about to let you in on some well kept secrets of how to transform last seasons garments into fresh, and colourful spring must haves!
I think it’s safe to say that we all have clothes in our wardrobes that we never wear due to their unflattering nature, or their inability to fit in with the new season looks. Now we can use them to transform our outfits, so fear no more ladies! We are about to de-clog your closets!
Despite the persisting cold winds and rainy weather, spring is on its way, and crop tops can now be warn without suffering from hypothermia as a consequence. Instead of spending £20 or more on the new seasons crop tees, why not shorten some of your existing tops?
It seems quite obvious you say. But many people are often worried about ruining the item or doing it wrong. Well, I am about to give you some tips, so listen carefully.
Firstly, choose a pastel colour top or something with a floral edge to stay bang on trend. Secondly, try not to cut material which is likely to unravel, such as crochet or lace, as this will ruin the top. If you are worried about the top unravelling, its really easy to sew a hem to keep the material in place, and stop the material from ripping.
If you want to add a hem, then make sure you cut the material an inch or two longer than the length you want it to avoid the end length being too short. The hem can be very easily stitched, but if you have a sewing machine, the hem will be more secure. Happy cropping!
For those of you who are reluctant to spend £50 or more on the spring must have, which is the nautical blazer, I have a quick and easy way to spice up a plain jersey jacket.
To exhibit classic sailor chic, just pin or sew a badge onto the breast pocket of the jacket. This gives a spring edge to the blazer, and draws attention by adding detail to the garment. You could also change or add new buttons to the blazer.
For nautical chic, gold buttons go really well with stitched badges and the metallic detail adds a more dressy look to the, otherwise plain garment. Your new blazer can be warn with jeans to create a more casual look, or with a nice summery dress for an evening/more formal outfit.
To spruce up other items in your wardrobe, such as plain white shirts, you could tie a silky black bow around the collar to create a bow tie feel to the shirt. This is a very Chanelesque look and works brilliantly with a floaty high-waisted skirt or tailored black trousers.
It’s really easy to find bits of material such as lace and silk in your local haberdashery store and just use them as a nice finishing touch to an outfit. You could tie the material around your waist to create curves and subtle detailing. Or you could tie the material in your hair for a feminine look. This could save you plenty of cash, with some Alice bands costing over £10.
It is important not to forget about local markets and haberdashery stores as they stock very cheap and essential tools, which can be used to continually update your wardrobe and save you money. Never be afraid to experiment and pass on your fashion DIY secrets!
